Is there a hurricane right now in the USA? ›

When the surface water is warm, the storm sucks up heat energy from the water, just like a straw sucks up a liquid. This creates moisture in the air. If wind conditions are right, the storm becomes a hurricane. This heat energy is the fuel for the storm.

Tropical climates are characterized by constant high temperatures (at sea level and low elevations); all 12 months of the year have average temperatures of 18 °C (64.4 °F) or higher; and generally high annual precipitation. There is no winter, per se. Frost does not occur, allowing tropical vegetation to flourish.

A Pacific to an Atlantic storm is a little rarer compared to Atlantic storms crossing over into the Pacific. Since 1851, when we started keeping records, there have been four unnamed storms that have crossed over from the Pacific into the Atlantic. Hermine was the last storm to cross over in 2010.

Affected areas include all Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, parts of the Southwest, the Pacific Coast, and the U.S. territories in the Pacific. People who live on the coast are most at risk for extreme winds and flooding from rain and storm surge.

Florida experiences the most hurricanes in the U.S. overall, with a total of 120 hurricanes from 1851 to 2022. In general, the Gulf Coast states (Florida, Texas, Louisiana) are the most susceptible to hurricanes, followed by East Coast and mid-Atlantic states.

Often hurricanes in the Atlantic begin as a thunderstorm complex that moves off the coast of Africa. It becomes what is known as a midtropospheric wave. If this wave encounters favorable conditions such as stated in the first five ingredients, it will amplify and evolve into a tropical storm or hurricane.
